STEP 1

The project lives in a folder.

First, create a separate folder like my-first-project. It'll have files from one program.

✦ Each project has its own folder, so it is easier to find a job.

STEP 2

Select File → Open Folder, specify the project folder, then create the hello.py file in it through the New File icon.

✦ The extension .py says it is a Python file.

Create a folder my-first-project, open it in VS Code and add a file hello.py. Check that the file is visible on the left in Explorer.
